Concept for new museum of art in Ahrenshoop

In 1890 an Artists´colony was founded in Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea. After a long period of preparation it was decided to build a “Museum of Art” in Ahrenshoop.  For over a century, artists were attracted to Ahrenshoop and the surrounding areas, they came once or regularly, had shorter or longer stays and were and still are inspired by the beauty of the landscape. Different influences existed here side by side on a small space and influenced each other in a positive way. The continuity in the art-historic appearance of the artists´ colony is unique.

A private initiative of citizens´ under the chairmanship of Guenter Roese, editor in Berlin, worked on the establishment of the “Museum of Art” in Ahrenshoop to act as a place for collections, exhibitions, documentation, and as a research centre. Its purpose is to follow up with the development of similar German and European artists´colonies. Responsible for the initiative, is the association “Freunde und Förderer des Kunstmuseums Ahrenshoop e.V.” and the foundation “Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop”.

The project is seen as a cultural highlight and gets funding from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media of the Federal Government of Germany. The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the FAMA art foundation and other private sponsors also supports it. Parallel to the building complex, investments will take place to develop and expand the museums collection. After the acquisition of land and the announcement of an international designer competition in September 2008 the design of the architects „Staab“ from Berlin was chosen for the building of the museum. The design- and planning permission for the building was completed in late 2009. The building of the museum will start in springtime 2011.
