Dachau

Willingshausen in Hessen, Dachau in Bavaria and Kronberg im Taunus belong to the early German artists' locations of the first half and the middle of the 19th century. From about 1840 Dachau and its moors - situated not far from Munich and offering the possibility to paint en plein air - attracted artists like Christian Morgenstern and Carl Spitzweg, and later Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. The real influx, however, came in the 1890's, when a number of artists settled in the region. Adolf Hölzel, Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer are considered the most important members of the then established artists' colony Neu-Dachau. They were bound by their common search for new methods of artistic expression and their long personal friendship. Hölzel started a painting school in 1891, which attracted a lot of woman painters to whom most official academies were forbidden territory until 1919. With the outbreak of World War I, there came an end to the artists' colony Neu-Dachau.
