Worpswede

“Worpswede, Worpswede . . . it is a wonderland!", Paula Becker wrote in her diary in 1897 and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke enthused about a "sky of indescribable variability and grandeur”. To the present day artists and visitors interested in art and culture are captivated by the charm of Worpswede and its sandy hill - the "Weyerberg". Birch trees line the streets into the village, situated 25 km north-east of Bremen, in the midst of the expansive, picturesque “Teufelsmoor” [Devil's Moor] with river Hamme and its lowlands. After the painter Fritz Mackensen and his friends - Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck and Heinrich Vogeler - settled here in 1889 their names became popular by the way of a very successful exhibition in 1895. This was the birth of Worpswede as artistvillage.

Meanwhile lots of artists followed and Worpswede as artistsvillage has even become an interisting place for young scholarship holders. Up to now the synthesis of art, culture, architecture and landscape in Worpswede creates an unique atmosphere. Exhibitions of the "old Worpswede masters" and those of the 1920s take place in several museums, art and cultural institutions as for example the famous Barkenhoff, Große Kunstschau, Haus im Schluh, Käseglocke, Museum am Modersohn-Haus and Worpsweder Kunsthalle Friedrich Netzel. Some of them are built by artists of the founder generation and they represent the spirit of Art Nouveau and Expressionism.
