AHRENSHOOP - HIDDENSEE - SCHWAAN

Ahrenshoop/Germany

ART AND CULTURE TOUR - ARTIST´S COLONIES ALONG THE BALTIC SEA

The art and culture tour focuses on three of the main German artists´ colonies along the Baltic Sea. Ahrenshoop counts as the most picturesque colony in Germany. The sea resort is situated idyllically between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden. Numerous paintings show the unique beauty of the landscape, with the long sandy beach and the reed covered houses, which are preserved until today.

On the sunny island of Hiddensee artists found retreat and new inspirations. The poet Gerhart Hauptmann loved the harsh beauty of the island. Eventually other painters, actors, sculptors and intellectuals followed him to work on the island and be inspired by its landscape.

The old water mill in Schwaan, near Rostock, was converted into a museum. It treasures paintings of  plein-air painters, who were attracted by the beautiful riverside. Two further highlights of the tour are a trip to Stralsund and Guestrow. The former Hanseatic city of Stralsund, with its well-preserved historic building complex, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Guestrow, the famous Expressionist sculptor Ernst Barlach, created his most important piece in the Gertrudechapel on the Inselsee.
