Szolnok, a city of a county rank, is situated a 100 kilometres east from Budapest, where the Tisza and the Zagyva rivers meet. It is a meeting point of the Great Plain's waterways, railways and overland routes. The town has 78.000 residents, which puts it into the position of the eleventh largest towns in Hungary.
The artists' colony was inaugurated in 1902 with 12 studios. Today it greets painters, sculptors and visitors in a renewed form. Besides its eminent fine art traditions, Szolonk's most important genre these days is in music.
